Located in Brookside Park, the Band Shell is an outdoor, open-air amphitheater with bench seating for over 1,500 and lawn seating for another 1,500 or more. The summer performance series offers outstanding programming that includes concerts featuring national, regional, and local performers; professional dance companies; family programming; comedians and an annual Chautauqua series. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the facility is surrounded by 32 acres of ball fields; tennis, basketball, shuffleboard and horseshoe courts; a swimming pool, playgrounds, mini-golf, fishing pond, covered bridge, Johnny Appleseed Monument, Veterans Memorial and several picnic areas.
Where do I park?
There are several parking areas throughout Brookside Park along with off- and on-street parking spaces. A limited number of handicap parking spaces are available through the drive behind the Band Shell facility for use by vehicles with a valid handicap permit, on a first-come, first-served basis, at no charge. If handicap spaces are full upon your arrival, handicapped passengers can be dropped-off at this location for easy access while the driver finds another parking location.
Brookside Park is built in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Please remember to be considerate of private properties and value our available green space as parkland.
I've never been to the Band Shell for a performance. Where do I go?
Brookside Park is bordered between West Main and Sandusky Streets, Parkside Drive and Lindale Avenue. The Band Shell is located at the southwest corner of Brookside Park at West Main Street and Parkside Drive. No matter where you enter Brookside Park, parking is available throughout the park with walking access to the Band Shell.
How do I dress?
However you would like - there is no dress code. Folks tell us they like the casual, informal atmosphere and dress accordingly. But the park can turn chilly toward the end of a theater performance or concert - even in the middle of summer. So you may want to bring a jacket or sweater, just in case.
Do we need tickets to get in since the performances are free?
There are no tickets for Band Shell performances. All events are free and open to the public with a suggested $2.00 per person freewill donation. We require adult supervision of all children during performances, and strongly urge parents to remove children immediately if they are creating a disturbance.
Do you cancel the show if it rains?
All performances go on, rain or shine. However, performances will be relocated to one of the rain sites if needed. Every performance has a specified rain site at either the Ashland Middle School’s MCDOWELL AUDITORIUM or Ashland High School’s LITTLE THEATRE. If a performance is moved to a rain site, the information will be provided by 6 PM the evening of the performance on the Event Hot Line at 419-281-3018.
What happens if we're late for a performance?
We make every effort to start Band Shell events on time - so please allow ample time for travel, parking, and walking to the Band Shell. But if in spite of your good intentions, you arrive after the performance has started, please respect the performers and other audience members when finding a seating location.
Can we picnic on the lawn at the Band Shell before the concert? What can and can't I bring?
Concessions provided by Celebrations by Sallie! are now available at all performances along with ice cream from the Merry-Go-Round just down the hill from the facility. Band Shell patrons are also permitted to bring their own food and supplies to picnic before the performances. Ohio state law and local ordinance prohibit alcoholic beverages at Brookside Park. Also, do not bring glass items of any kind, candles (including incense or any type of burning insect repellant), firearms, or recording devices.
Why can't I smoke during a concert especially if I'm sitting on the lawn?
All patrons are asked to refrain from smoking within the Band Shell grounds in consideration for all other audience members. If necessary, please smoke outside of the Band Shell grounds.
What other rules should I be aware of?
Please do not distribute flyers or promotional materials without asking permission from the Band Shell coordinator. If this request is ignored, staff will confiscate the materials and return them after audience members have left.
Before entering the performance, please turn off all audible message systems as well as beeping watches, cell phones and other electronic devices. If you must take a call, please exit the Band Shell grounds so your conversation does not disturb the performers or fellow audience members.
The Band Shell reserves the right to ask disruptive patrons and those refusing to respect our rules to leave the premises.
If I lose an item at a performance, who could tell me if it was found?
Lost and Found is located in the maintenance building behind the Band Shell. Please notify a Band Shell staff member or call the Park Office at 419-289-8247 during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM).
How can I become an usher?
We encourage individuals, social groups, corporations, church/synagogue groups and students to volunteer as ushers at the Band Shell. For more information on becoming a volunteer, call the Park Office at 419-289-8247 or email [email protected]
